Volunteers gather in front of a batch of toys purchased through the Christmas Happiness Fund to bring Christmas to approximately 300 children in the Greensville-Emporia Community.

Thanks to businesses, civic organizations and citizens, the Independent-Messenger and Greensville-Emporia Dept. of Social Services raised more than $11,000 for the Christmas Happiness Fund allowing us with the help of many volunteers to bring Christmas to nearly 300 children in need.

We have already started collecting donations for next year’s Christmas Happiness Fund, which will mark the 40th year of bringing Christmas to children in need.

Donations may be dropped off at the newspaper’s office at 111 Baker St. or mailed to P.O. Box 786, Emporia, VA 23847.

The following donations have been made:

n $820 from the staff of SVRMC;

n $50 from anonymous;

n $25 from Estherine J. Harding in honor of Lizzie R. James;

n $332 from Greensville County School Board Office;

n $50 from anonymous in memory of Dorothy Lifsey;

n $100 from Ruth Tillar in memory of Cato Tillar;

n $50 from the Parham family in memory of Jennifer Parham and grandparents;

n $ 50 from Lutheran Ladies League;

n $10 Katie Moody in memory of husband Stewart R. Moody, Jr.;

n $1,000 from anonymous;

n $75 from Megha Properties.
