Greensville County senior Jazlyn Jefferson added a pair of track and field state championships to her collection last week at Roanoke College’s Cregger Center with indoor track titles in the Triple Jump and 300 meter dash. In the spring Jefferson won state championships in the long jump and 400 meter dash.
Last week Jefferson and Chilhowie’s Molly Rhudy battled for titles in two events. Rhudy defeated Jefferson in the long jump with a leap of 17-07.25 to 17-01.75, but Jefferson bested Rhudy in the triple jump 36.08.5 to 35.07. The triple jump mark for Jefferson set a GCHS record for the event.
Jefferson won the 300-meter dash with a time of 43.55, edging James River’s Erin Walker, who crossed the finish line at 43.68. The two championships and one runner-up finish for Jefferson gave Greensville 28 points for a team finish of No. 9 in the state. Maggie Walker won the team state title.
For Jefferson it ended a busy week that was culminated Friday with the basketball team advancing to the state semifinals with a 51-39 victory against Page County.
“It feels really good to win two state championships and keep moving forward in basketball,” Jefferson said. “I’m putting in my all for Greensville.”
Jefferson scored two early buckets in the second half Friday’s game against Page County as the Lady Eagles advanced one step closer to a possible state championship. It everything works out the way Jefferson hopes it will, she could add to four state championship rings and have one for the thumb on Saturday
It she and her squad come up short, the one for the thumb will have to wait until spring.
