Linda Shields Brockwell, 78, died Wednesday, June 19, at Covenant Woods in Mechanicsville, Va.

Linda was born on Dec. 6, 1941, the day before “the date which will live in infamy,” in Jarratt, Va. to Jennings Parrish Shields and May Elizabeth Vick Shields, but lived most of her life in Emporia, Va. After graduation from Jarratt High School in 1960, she took a job with C&T Telephone and accepted positions in Norfolk and Richmond, as well as Atlanta, Ga.

She was a lifelong teacher, preferring preschool education for 4-5 year-olds. After running a small but successful and beloved preschool in her Westover Hills home for many years, Linda continued her child development career at Rainbow World and Monumental United Methodist Church.

She also served as a front desk receptionist at the Family YMCA of Emporia-Greensville at its original location. She was an avid reader and an active member of Main Street Baptist Church.

Linda is survived by her three sons, Richard W. Brockwell, Jr. of Midlothian, Va., P. Heath Brockwell of Atlantic Beach, Fla., and Kent Jennings Brockwell of Bon Air, Va., six grandchildren, her brother “Bo” Jennings Anderson Shields of Hadensville, Va., and her sisters Jean Quirk of Gainesville, Fla., and Anne Hairston of Frenchtown, N.J.

Deceased’s funeral arrangements : A memorial service will be held Friday, June 28 at 11 a.m. at Covenant Woods (7090 Covenant Woods Drive, Mechanicsville, VA 23111), with a preceding visitation for family and friends at 10 a.m. at the same location.In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to the J.
