LAWRENCEVILLE – Imagine the excitement when first grade students in Jacklyn Clinedinst’s class at Brunswick Academy learned their book “Turkey Tales” was published. Each student was presented a hard copy of the book that includes stories they each wrote in their handwriting with illustrations. When the books were handed out, what did each student do? Find their story of course. A copy of the book was also donated to the school library for other students to enjoy.

The first graders learned about the writing process this fall. Clinedinst provided background on the book project and shared what a great learning experience it was.

“We spent about two weeks learning about the writing process. We talked about the brainstorming process, rough drafts, final drafts, and illustrations. Once we discussed the process, we did a pumpkin inspired story so we could ‘practice’ the steps of the writing process. Once we finalized our practice piece, we moved on to our turkey story.

“Each student had to create a turkey tale. Every story had to have a turkey character and the problem that the turkey did not want to get eaten for the upcoming holiday dinner. Other than those restrictions, all the students had free range of creativity. We read two different stories, Turkey Trouble and Turkey Claus, to help inspire our creativity. I must say I was floored when I saw what my students had created. Their illustrations were beyond anything that I could imagine. I was so impressed with their creativity and how they solved the turkey’s problem! Once we finished our final drafts, we mailed our books off to be published. The excitement of having a book that they wrote published has been amazing to see. They have just enjoyed this process so much more than I could have imagined. I cannot wait to see what stories we create next.” Clinedinst stated.
