Jorge Martinez prepares to strike the ball.

E. W. Wyatt Middle School began a soccer program nine years ago.

The first coach was former art instructor Jessica Tanner. Upon Tanner’s departure Mitchell Smith took over the program for four years, before he also left the system.

Ultimately the Wyatt soccer team has had success, including two trips to the playoffs, however low numbers has caused a hiatus for the last two seasons. This season that changed under new Coach Akaronu, or as the players call him , Coach “A”.

The Wyatt team got off to a slow start with numbers but by the first day of school the squad carried 15 players, and traveled to Russell to compete. The team won tin overtime by a score of 3-2. Patrick Brown, Arais Council, and Treyvion Spruill all scored goals.

The team missed its second game due to a hurricane. The Panthers got their second game in against Powhatan. Size was a factor in this match, and Powhatan won 11-0. The middle school team is in a unique position this season with no home games. This is largely because the team does not have goals for its home field. The Panthers are currently practicing without goals.
