Ed Bryant speaks during the 2015 Memorial Day Service in Veterans Park.

When Memorial Day came up on the calendar last spring, Emporia-Greensville did not have a service honoring those in the armed forces that gave their lives in service of the nation. It left a sour taste in the mouths of many in the community, but the ceremony will be happening in Emporia-Greensville this year.

American Legion Post 46 Commander Rick Young said there will be a service at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27 at Veterans Park in Emporia. The ceremony is co-sponsored by Post 46 and American Legion Post 151.

“One way or the other we wanted to make sure there will be a Memorial Day Service this year,” Young said. “We just want to get the word out early so everyone knows it will be held.”

Young said most local American Legion members are getting a little older and they rely on help from groups such as the Junior ROTC and Boy Scouts of America. This year’s service is still in the planning stages, but there will be a ceremony.
