Bracey Jones-Barnes, a kindergarten teacher at Greensville Elementary School , hit on a “borrowed” plan to get each student a book a month.

Each month the teachers receive a Scholastic Book Club order form to send home to students to share with their families and purchase books if they choose. Many families in our small rural community cannot afford to purchase books at various times of the year when holidays and new school supplies take up so much of their incomes.

In past years, she has noticed that students are excited to receive a book for a holiday or special reward, and reading is extremely important. Barnes would like to continue to foster the love of books in the Kindergartners at GES, since the ability to read can make or break a child’s academic career and helps to shape their future.

Each month Scholastic has a book for the price of $1. Barnes would like each student to be able to get a new book each month, and while that seems almost impossible, it is only $9 per student to provide each child with a book every month of the school year.

Barnes is asking the community to step up, and sponsor a child in her class and the other classes at GES. So for the tiny price of $9, you can be a sponsor for a child to get a new book each month. To become a sponsor contact Barnes at (434) 336-0907 or email Barnes at bjones@gcps1.com
