May 31 will mark the second consecutive year the Emporia/Roanoke Rapids Hokie Club’s annual scholarship golf tournament is titled the Moses Clements VT Scholarship Golf Tournament in honor of Clements, who died from the effects of Lou Gehrig’s disease on Sept. 23, 2017.

Clements was the longtime chair of the group’s scholarship committee and the annual golf tournament is the event raising the revenue to go toward scholarship funding for soon to be freshmen enrolling at Virginia Tech.

The scholarships will be distributed in the summer during the Emporia/Roanoke Rapids Hokie Club’s annual banquet later this summer.

The golf tournament has been an annual event for more than two decades, always draws a strong turnout of players seeking day of fun on the golf course and a chance to help students pursuing an education at the Blacksburg school.

“It’s a lot of fun, a lot of camaraderie and a lot of good food,” Hokie Club member Barry Grizzard said.

The even begins at noon at Emporia Country Club, 578 Country Club Rd.  Golfers begin the day with a box lunch and a chance to get ready for the 1 p.m. tee-time by practicing at the driving range. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. 

The cost to play in the tournament is $60 per player, which includes 18 holes of golf, use of a golf cart, green fees, goody bag, beverages, two mulligans, box lunch and hors d’oeuvres after the event during the awards ceremony.

Businesses and individuals may also add to the success of the tournament by hole sponsorships for $100. If you are planning on sponsoring a hole, please do so soon so the signs can be made and put on the holes.
