William E. Johnson, III has been appointed City Manager for the City of Emporia effective Sept. 17.

The Emporia City Council has selected Johnson as the City’s next Manager. Johnson has served in a variety of local government and private sector positions. He currently serves as Business Development Manager with Prestige Construction Company.

A Virginia native, Johnson has an extensive background in local government. During his career he has served as a City Manager, County Administrator, and Director of Finance. He has prepared and managed numerous annual operating and capital budgets which included several special funds and served on numerous Boards and Commissions.

He will follow Brian S. Thrower who resigned effective June 30 after 12 years of service to the City, to accept the Town Manager’s position in Smithfield.

He was selected from 21 highly qualified applicants. Johnson holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Averett College and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Hampton University.

“I am looking forward to the next chapter and look forward to working with the Mayor and City Council in Emporia, Va.,” Johnson said. “I am excited about this opportunity.”

Mayor Mary Person said she was pleased with the selection.

“The City is pleased to welcome William Johnson to Emporia as our new City Manager,” she said. “He comes highly recommended and is well qualified to move the City forward.  We are grateful he chose the City of Emporia to further his career. We look forward to him working with our citizens, businesses, and the community at large to make our City an even greater place to live and conduct business.”
